Designed Thermal Management System for Steam Injected TurboFan Concept Engine

Consultation provided to Rolls-Royce and the University of Cambridge, on behalf of the University of Oxford, for a thermally complex novel jet engine concept.

The Question

How can a highly thermally-constrained, novel jet engine concept be given a viable, integrated thermal management solution?

Why It Matters

Novel jet engine concepts often push thermal loads beyond what conventional heat exchanger designs can handle. Without a workable thermal management solution, an otherwise promising engine concept cannot progress from paper design to real hardware.

What I Did
  • Led consultation to Rolls-Royce and Cambridge University on behalf of Oxford University
  • Built low-order thermal models to explore the design space quickly
  • Designed, sized, and optimised three novel heat exchangers
  • Developed CAD models for each design

The heat exchanger CAD models and performance results from this consultation are confidential to Rolls-Royce, the University of Cambridge, and the University of Oxford, and cannot be shown publicly.

The performance of the designed heat exchangers was one of the contributing factors behind Cambridge University's successful £100,000 research grant application, to progress the engine concept further.

Impact / What's Next

The three heat exchanger designs and the funding they unlocked directly enabled further research collaboration between Oxford, Cambridge, and Rolls-Royce on this engine concept.
